One of the downsides to pregnancy is the postpartum hair loss that many women encounter. I experienced it after my first daughter was born four years ago, and around three months after I had my second daughter this past June, my hair started falling out—but this time around, it was noticeably worse. In fact, I wasn’t truly aware how thin my hair had gotten until I compared the following before and after photos! While there are plenty of supplements on the market that can be taken for hair loss and thinning, there isn’t enough evidence to support whether or not they are safe for breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is my priority right now but obviously I didn’t want to wait until I finished to begin my hair regrowth journey, so I did some research on other products I could try and as you’ll see, I’ve had a lot of success so far. Another major bonus: the products I’ve been using are significantly less expensive than other well-known hair loss supplements and safe for breastfeeding mommas.
The Key Product & Supplements That Helped My Hair Grow Back Postpartum
I started searching around on beauty retailers and decided to give this scalp anti-thinning tonic a try since it had great reviews. This tonic has been a game changer and it couldn’t be easier to use: all you do is spritz it on thin areas twice a day (which I typically do morning and night). Fortunately it’s not greasy or noticeable in hair either, so you can also apply when it’s dry. I’ve been using it consistently for about three months and I think you’ll be shocked by my results! This comparison shows my thinned-out hair on October 29th, 2021 when I began using the scalp treatment, along with my results on January 22, 2022. I knew my hair had started coming back over the last several months since I have plenty of baby hair but I was completely blown away by just how much it’s grown.
In addition to the scalp tonic, I’ve been taking these postpartum vitamins and a calcium/magnesium/zinc blend supplement since giving birth in June. The postnatal vitamins contain various B vitamins and Biotin, which supports hair growth, and while I truthfully do not know if the calcium supplements help, I simply wanted to list exactly what I’ve been taking so this post is completely transparent.
Other Hair Products I Use to Prevent Further Damage & Strengthen Hair
I’m extremely careful with my hair when it comes to heat styling so my existing hair stays strong and healthy while the new hair continues to grow. I always use a heat protectant before blow-drying and I also do not dry it all the way. The Redken Play Safe treatment is fantastic for protection while blow drying and the Living Proof thickening cream helps add volume when I need a boost.
I’ve tried a lot of heat protectant sprays over the years for use with styling tools and this one from Living Proof is by far my favorite. My hair never feels crunchy or sticky when I use it, like many other products often do. I spray each section of my hair before curling to ensure all of it is protected from heat damage.
