I can’t believe we’ll be celebrating the Fourth of July this weekend and Juliette will be one month old next week—I feel like I blinked and the month of June was over! I had so much fun coordinating outfits for our first family photo shoot including baby Jules. Since it’s summer and the perfect time to take family photos outdoors or on vacation, I thought I’d share some easy tips I follow to coordinate outfits for group photos.
Easy Tips for Coordinating Family Outfits
Choose a similar color scheme
As a starting point for coordinating outfits, I always think of the colors I want all of us to wear. Since these photos were for the Fourth of July, I knew I wanted to include red, white and blue.
Don’t be afraid to mix patterns
Matching outfits is always cute but don’t be afraid to mix patterns in the same color scheme. Here, Lila is wearing a star print dress and Jules is in stripes, while I anchored the two prints with a neutral solid-colored look (this roundup has some beautiful neutral clothing if you need inspiration for your own outfit).
Consider seasons & photo location to help select clothing
Think about the time of year and where you’ll be taking photos to choose your family’s clothing. The laidback dresses, denim shorts and straw hat (more styles here) in this shoot speak to the summer season and complement the outdoor location of our farm.
Avoid logos and add texture
Clothing with logos or loud patterns can be very distracting in group photos, so I recommend avoiding them. If you want to add interest to your outfits, think about mixing textures. We’re wearing lightweight linen and seersucker in this summery shoot, but if it were fall I would consider heavier fabrics like suede or wool.
