How To

Commando versus Spanx Faux Leather Leggings: Which Pair is Best?

Meagan Brandon fashion blogger of Meagan's Moda reviews Spanx and Commando faux leather leggings, which pair is better

Faux leather leggings have been a huge trend for the last few years and they don’t appear to be going away anytime soon. Faux leather leggings are what I reach for multiple times a week when I want to stay comfy but add a little edge to my basic tops and sweaters. I’ve had requests on a review comparing the two brands, so I’ll be breaking down everything from sizing to material in this post.

Commando ‘Perfect Control’ Legging

Sizing

Most reviews on Commando leggings suggest to size up, but I disagree. I originally bought my usual size (XS) and a size up (S) and ultimately chose my true size. The larger size was easier to pull on, but there was too much extra fabric in the crotch area, which is definitely unattractive! Although very tight on the first wear, my usual size ended up being just right. In fact, there was actually a little tag attached to these leggings that read “worth the wiggle” in regards to the tight fit and that couldn’t be more accurate. I suggest wearing them around the house for a day and they’ll stretch to perfectly conform to your body. There is a hidden control panel in the waist, which is super high rise. Sometimes I have to reach in there and smooth it down after putting them on, but it’s not a big deal. The waist on this pair is much higher than the Spanx. Additionally, I like that the Commando leggings do not have a side seam on the outer leg, which gives a polished look and makes them easier to dress up. I also think these are more appropriate for wearing with shorter tops over the Spanx since they have a front seam and look like traditional pants.

Material

The material of the Commando leggings is a very realistic faux leather, which you’ll see in the closeup images below. Even my husband commented, “those look like real leather” when I was wearing them recently. That said, they sometimes show little wrinkles at your knees and ankles like leather does, so just something to consider if that bothers you.

Spanx Faux Leather Legging

Sizing

The Spanx faux leather leggings are definitely true to size so I don’t recommend sizing up. Like the Commando faux leather, they also stretch out a bit after continued wear. The control panel is encased in a very comfortable wide waistband, and I have never experienced issues with rolling at the top. The crotch area does not have a traditional front seam, which makes them smooth but a little odd for wearing with short tops (just in my opinion). Kinda looks like a Barbie doll if you know what I mean!

Material

The faux leather fabric of Spanx has more of a metallic sheen to it rather than looking like true leather. There’s also a pretty large side seam going down each leg. I think both of these qualities make them more casual/sporty leggings compared to the Commando. As far as mobility, though, I think the Spanx has a little more give than Commando. The waist also isn’t as high-rise (although equally slimming).

“So Which Pair Should I Get?”

This is the question I hear most from anyone who’s shopping for faux leather leggings. To answer, I think it all comes down to personal style. If you tend to be casual and mostly wear tees, sweatshirts, sneakers, etc., then I recommend the Spanx since they are more subtle. If you like to dress up or wear edgier outfits, then go with Commando for a high-fashion vibe. I love both of mine, but honestly I have been reaching for the Commando pair more lately since I love the look of leather pants and they’re fantastic with heels. Hope this post was helpful and let me know in the comments if you have any other questions!
