Today I want to share my recent blogger nightmare experience. I knew it could happen one day and unfortunately it did right after our trip to Dubai. We typically shoot all of my blog photos on CF (compact flash) cards because they allow the camera to shoot and ‘read’ images faster. Since our cards can hold 128 GB, I’m also usually carrying around a lot of material until I can move them onto my hard drive. Well, we took two of these cards with us to Dubai and had to switch halfway through the trip after the first card filled up. When we got home, I tried to open the first card on my computer and it didn’t read anything. We tried looking at them on the camera, too, and still nothing showed up. After doing a lot of research and trying different tips, my husband told me he didn’t think there’s anything we could do to recover the lost images. I had a good cry (okay, I may have cried on and off for a few hours), and then had to accept that we lost a lot of work—two blog shoots and the only professional images we took of Lila on the trip, which is the saddest part.
Because of what happened, I thought I would still share a few photos I had on my phone so it wouldn’t be a total loss. We snapped these after a blog shoot at the same location—Jumeirah Beach. The sail-shaped building behind me is the Burj Al Arab, one of the most well-known and prestigious hotels in the world.
Take my experience as a warning to always, always transfer your images as soon as possible after a photo shoot—and try not to have too many on one card just in case you lose everything like we did. We’ve ordered more cards that hold less GB so if this happens again at least it may only be one shoot instead of multiple. My husband was reading horror stories of wedding photographers who had the same thing happen—I mean, can you imagine having to tell a bride that you lost everything from her wedding day?! I shudder just thinking about it. Anyway, I hope your week is off to a great start and thanks so much for stopping by today!
