Time is flying by—Lila Blake turned eleven weeks old yesterday! Although it’s bittersweet to see her growing and changing so quickly, we’re finally starting to get in the parenthood groove around here. As a new mom, figuring out what newborn essentials would work well with Lila was a lot of trial and error, but these five products are our can’t-live-without favorites.
Top 5 Newborn Essentials
The Rock ‘n Play is by far my number one must-have for all new mamas. My friends all raved about theirs and I’m so glad we bought one because I seriously don’t think my husband and I would have survived without it! Lila slept in this until she was about eight weeks old because it took awhile for her to get used to the bassinet crib. We didn’t even have it running during the night; I think she just preferred it over the bassinet because of the way it cradles her body. She still naps in this daily and the rocking motion is a great soother when she’s fussy.
Not only is this pacifier super cute, but the tip is a Philips Avent Soothie, which is the type of pacifier Lila has preferred from the beginning. One of the nurses I know told me Wubbanubs are the number one kind used in NICU at hospitals and I can see why. While Lila doesn’t have the grasping capability totally down, she still loves to touch the stuffed toy. I had to buy another just so we’d always have one on hand if the other was being washed!
I remember hearing about this ‘mommy secret’ years ago, when my friends first started having babies, and somehow it popped back into my mind when I was shopping for newborn items before Lila was born. She has what we like to call the ‘witching hour’ almost daily around 5:30-7:00 when she’s fussy for no real reason, so we’ll usually give her a dose then. We also bought the nighttime formula just in case she’s having a hard time calming down for bed (I’m not sure what the difference is but people swear there is one).
One of our friends gifted this to us and we love it for bedtime. My husband is much better at swaddling Lila with a traditional muslin blanket than I am, so when I have to swaddle her, I use the Woombie as a second outer layer so she won’t wriggle out of the muslin beneath. I just ordered another in the next size up since she’s already about to outgrow her newborn one (sad face).
If your babe has a stuffy nose, this little gadget works a lot better than the traditional ‘snot sucker’ bulbs, and it’s also a lot more hygienic since you can actually wash it out (the bulbs can grow mold!) It works by placing the blue tip against baby’s nostril (not inside, so it’s less invasive), and sucking on the red portion to draw out mucus. Don’t worry, there’s a disposable filter inside which prevents any snot from going in your mouth, ha!
