I’m running on four hours of sleep and three cups of coffee, so I’m dragging a bit today. Most of you have probably heard the news, but Italy is grieving after experiencing a massive 6.2 earthquake in the wee hours of the morning. Although the epicenter was about 65 miles northeast of Rome, the tremors were strong enough that it woke most of us up when it happened at 3:36 this morning. I woke up when I heard the metal shutters rattling on our bedroom window, and at first I thought a burglar was trying to get in (unfortunately a common threat in Rome during vacation season). Then I felt our bed swaying back and forth, so I quickly shook my husband awake and switched on the light. When we saw the furniture shaking, we realized that it had to be an earthquake. I felt two more aftershocks at 4:30 and 6:00, but there may have been more. A few small villages where it occurred have been completely destroyed and the death toll is still climbing as rescuers search through the rubble for missing people. Those of us in Rome are fortunate that the only effect here was some strong shaking, but it was certainly a reminder of how fragile life is and devastating natural disasters can be for their victims.I’ll go ahead and talk about this outfit I had originally planned to post before today’s events. Denim jackets are a closet essential because you can wear one with practically anything: over a dress, with casual or dressy pants, skirts, or even pulling a ‘Canadian tuxedo’ by wearing it with a pair of jeans. A denim jacket is guaranteed to be stylish forever, so consider them a wardrobe investment. Case in point: I’ve had this one for about ten years and still love it just as much as the day I purchased it. Here are a few more options that I love (and all of which are closet-worthy):
Throwing a denim jacket over any outfit gives it an instant casual vibe, which I played up here with a slouchy suede tote and studded booties.Don’t forget to cuff your sleeves for that nonchalant ‘cool-girl’ look!I could write much more about denim jackets if I weren’t so exhausted. I wasn’t able to go back to sleep after waking up from the earthquake, so it’s an early bedtime for me tonight—lots of packing and cleaning to do tomorrow before we leave for vacation. Thank you all for reading!
