Do you ever see something beautiful while shopping, immediately fall in love, and proceed to convince yourself that your wardrobe won’t be complete without said beautiful piece? Then, while outfit planning later on at home, you’re actually kind of stumped about how to wear it. That’s how I felt about this trench cape. Obviously a regular trench coat would have been much easier to style, but I liked how the cape silhouette put a unique twist on the original. It’s really not as hard as it looks to style, but rather about choosing the right pieces to pair with it. My cape is from last year, but I linked a similar new one below that’s on sale and comes in tan or navy (so pretty!)For a statement jacket like this, I’ve found it’s usually best to keep the rest of the outfit simple and streamlined since the upper half is boxy. My favorite top to layer underneath is just a plain long-sleeve tee in a solid color, or striped for a little nautical feel. For bottoms, skinny pants are the best bet, but I do like the look of these crop flares as a nod to the current retro trend.
Sometimes I’ll also add a pin for a touch of elegance.A delicate handbag and lace-up pumps complete my outfit while adding contrast to the oversized shape of this cape. For additional outfit ideas using a trench cape, see how I wore mine a few other times here and here.
