Today something happened that hasn’t since before we moved to our new neighborhood: two people on the street smiled and spoke to me. First was a man who works at the auto shop I walk by every day, and then the guy who runs the market where I buy a lot of our produce. The thought, ‘Hey, wait–they know me now!’ didn’t occur to me until I arrived at the garage to pick up our car and was greeted by the attendant, who always says, ‘Ciao bella!’ when I walk in. In a place that’s a world away from our hometown, and at least ten times the size of it, I’m slowly starting to feel a sense of belonging.
One of my favorite summertime looks, and one that is totally fitting for an afternoon in the park, is a tank with a full skirt accompanied by wedge sandals and a wide-brimmed straw hat. I have really been missing the two beautiful parks that practically used to be next door to us in our temporary apartment, but while we were exploring the city last weekend, we happened to discover Villa Torlonia, another picturesque park on the other side of town. After taking some photos we grabbed a few birre (my ‘beer’ was a Morreti limone–an Italian brand that’s lemon-flavored and the least ‘beer’-like brew I’ve tasted) and enjoyed the gorgeous weather from a park bench for a little while. I can’t wait to pack up some wine and snacks and head there for a real picnic someday soon!
