Last weekend, we drove about an hour and a half Southwest out of Rome to visit the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in Nettuno. It’s one of two permanent American World War II cemeteries in Italy, and is dedicated to those who died or went missing during the American-British invasion to liberate Italy. It’s always sobering to visualize the number of lives lost in war, and in this particular cemetery there are over 7,000 headstones on 77 acres. The interior memorial consists of a chapel, map room, and walls lined with names of missing soldiers. Outside the chapel is the ‘Brothers in Arms’ sculpture which represents the U.S. Army and Navy working together towards a common goal. The North Garden (pictured above) is adorned with seasonal flowers and a granite fountain. The grounds and gardens were immaculate and the entire area was so incredibly peaceful.
After our visit to the cemetery, we headed to the beach for coffee and our oceanfront table at The Bench offered a perfect view of the Tyrrhenian Sea. After our cappuccinos, we walked around the town for a little sightseeing and stopped again for a few cocktails and an appertivo before heading back to Rome.
