I’m excited to be sharing my first hair tutorial with you all! If you hadn’t already noticed, this is a frequent hairstyle of mine on the blog and I’ve received quite a few requests for a how-to. It’s my go-to for messy or unwashed hair and is especially wonderful for keeping my neck cool in the summer heat. I dubbed this the “faux sock bun” because so many people think that’s what it is. But honestly, I’ve been doing this style for many years and find it much easier to do than a true sock bun. Last year, I bought a sock bun maker (it’s made of mesh instead of a sock) and found it quite difficult to cover the “bun” completely. I also prefer this because it’s a softer look with a messy-chic vibe.
What you’ll need:
- Hairbrush
- Anti-frizz polish (I like Redken Outshine)
- Bobby pins (preferably ones which closely match your hair color)
- One thick hair tie
- Hand mirror
First, use a pea-sized dab of the anti-frizz creme and smooth it throughout hair using your fingers.
Next, gather hair into a high ponytail, only pulling the tail halfway through the tie at the end (I’m showing about where I usually stop–I may pull it through a little more than this).
Twist the back portion of the half-pony loop around to the front (clockwise direction) and begin securing with bobby pins. This gives it the bun-like effect because the hair is separated around the tie. Continue placing small sections of hair with bobby pins around the hair tie until it is completely covered and the look is relatively even on both sides. I use a hand mirror to see the back and sides of my head–forgot to add that to the materials photo!
Voila! You have the finished faux sock bun! It never looks the same, and actually this isn’t one of my best sock buns. If my hair is particularly frizzy, I’ll often add a headband. Good luck and please let me know if you have any other questions or hairstyle requests!
